Background
Better Cotton is the world's biggest cotton sustainability initiative. Our objective is to help cotton communities survive and grow while conserving and repairing the environment. In difficult times, we face the task head on. More than 2.9 million cotton farmers in 26 countries have received training in more sustainable growing practices through our network of field partners. More than one-fifth of the world's cotton is currently cultivated under the Better Cotton Standard, and we have over 2,400 members.
Better Cotton Initiative, Pakistan (BCI Pakistan) is based in Pakistan and operates on a collaboration/service agreement with Better Cotton, Global.
Our website, www.bettercotton.org, provides additional information about Better Cotton.
scope of work
Better Cotton Pakistan invites competent and experienced consultants/consulting firms to submit proposals for a research on Living Income and Economic Resilience in Better Cotton Programmed communities in Pakistan.
The Global Living Wage Coalition defines living income as the net income required for all members of a home to maintain a reasonable quality of living. A reasonable standard of living is defined as the local equivalent income required to provide basic needs such as food, water, shelter, education, health care, transportation, clothing, and other necessities, including provision for unexpected events.
The three main indices of social, environmental, and economic resilience are used by the Committee on Sustainability Assessment (COSA) to quantify resilience. Financial resources and producer livelihoods, of which the fundamental components are credit, assets, and saving (financial resources) and income and diversification (producer livelihoods), are important aspects of economic resilience.
Better Cotton pledges to raise the net income and resilience of two million farmers and workers throughout Better Cotton communities through the Better Cotton 2030 approach. Better Cotton manages a capacity-building initiative in Pakistan that is carried out by Better Cotton employees and seasoned field-level partners known as Better Cotton initiative Partners. The goal of this initiative is to help farming communities adapt to their unique local context and implement methods that align with our Standard, the Better Cotton Principles and Criteria 3.0. Better Cotton does not provide direct farmer training; instead, it makes resources and training available through its network of Program Partners, who are essential to the project's field-level success. Our Theory of Change and our Capacity Building information page have further details on this.
The cornerstone of the cotton industry is made up of farmers, laborers, and farming communities; without them, cotton would not exist, let alone Better Cotton. This implies that the sustainable production of cotton is intrinsically linked to their means of subsistence. In order to identify the primary demands and obstacles that farmers, laborers, and their families—especially women and young people—face in earning a living and leading fulfilling lives, it is imperative that practical and long-lasting solutions be found. This is essential to ensuring a sustainable cotton value chain as well as better living and working conditions as well as increased social inclusion.
